The College Executive and board of management keep reiterating that the Lecturers' pay rates through PN are the same as the rates all ready paid directly by the college....please follow the link below....

http://www.teachfe.com/viewjob.asp?jobid=59088

this is a current advert on TEACH FE a direct link from the PN website for a schools life drawing class (telford college runs this class) VISITING LECTURER post for 64 hours running till the end of session 07-08 at ......£10.17 per hour, hardly cover eh?. PN have already advertised for life models with no success, no wonder if the "LECTURER" is only getting £10.17 who knows what rate they were offering to pay the models!! As a result the college is now seeking its own Life Models out with PN...a move in the right direction...however this could result in the Life Model earning more than the "LECTURER" delivering the class. NOT WORLD CLASS, NOT THOUGHT OUT, NOT WORKING, NOT ETHICAL AND CERTAINLY STUPID. Senior management and individuals on the board of management within the college need to realise the College Executive has either been misinformed / led a dance by its HR Consultants ( who else do they work for...PN?), made a serious error of judgment or are misleading ALL of us. I wonder how our Educational careers would have progressed if we were being paid £10.17 at todays pay scales (I started on more than double that 10 years ago) with no employment/ pension rights or world class CPD. Our current students, many of who aspire to be a Teacher / Lecturer after their studies were horrified...one commented "I can earn more than that being a bar supervisor at the weekend". Says it all, there must be another way forward so ALL of us can get back to Teaching and Learning and getting a Good and Reputable College back on its feet before even more damage is done by The Executive not Learning from its mistakes.....some reflective and evaluative practice is desperately in order higher up.... any one got an ILP handy!

A few years ago I worked as a temporary lecturer at Telford College and found staff morale to be very low then. I also observed how assertive new members of staff seemed to climb the managerial ladder very quickly, having very little if any teaching experience and certainly no desire or interest in teaching. This, of course, added to the frustration of my then colleagues.
Obviously people who have hardly taught or rarely teach themselves or have gone out of their way to 'escape' teaching, can have little understanding of the difficulties of the job and the conditions which are conducive to effective teaching and learning. This management is not only incompetent and vindictive but seem to have little concern for the 'human rights' of their staff. Surely it is an individual's human right to have a space which they can personalize and feel at ease in to carry out their job effectively. It would seem that the aim of this management is to 'dehumanize' its staff perhaps with some naive view that this is in some way motivational. The introduction of the agency is just more of the same. Perhaps Ray Harris should go back to college/university himself and study psychology. Of course this man is responsible for a strike and a vote of no confidence at his previous college Stevenson. I talk to many colleagues throughout F.E and the message I am getting is that there is full support for the staff at Telford College.

The so-called management at Telford are arrogant and smallminded. They act on the ridiculous advice of some very doubtful characters, who have wormed their way up the ladder by saying what the managers want to hear. HR (mis)Management is rife. People are bullied and sickness levels are high. Cynical self preservation is the only guiding principle of the management team and their hangers-on, and should be tackled by inspectors and by the funding agencies, and anyone with any stake in FE, as well as by the students and the lecturers.

£10.17 per hour! I earned more than that in the 'no formal qualifications required' and 'limited responsibility' job that I left to come back to college as a full-time student! And I had job security.
