Strike enters 3rd Week

Members of the Edinburgh’s Telford College branch of the EIS continued their picket
today despite the adverse weather conditions. Support for the strike remains solid and messages of support continue to pour in from other branches, the local community,
politicians and most significantly students.

Members of the EIS are pleased to acknowledge that after 3 days of negotiations initiated
by the EIS, the Principalship has moved some way on this dispute.

However the basis of this dispute was to ensure EQUALITY of employment for ALL.

The EIS reject INEQUALITY in all its forms.

We are unable to settle this dispute while even a MINORITY are still discriminated against.

The EIS members will happily settle this dispute and return to their classrooms immediately, when the Principalship fulfils its duty to provide a solution that does not involve DISCRIMINATION.

A great turn out on such a bad day, despite the "unambiguous" (sic) call by management to staff late on Monday to return to work.

The EIS sanctioned this as an industrial dispute so members had to wait for the EIS to give their verdict before going back to work.

The email is yet another example of the unique blend of bullying and lack of professional competence that the management at Telford have become (in)famous for.

Are you perturbed that the newly appointed Human Resources Administrator doesn't understand basic industrial relations law?

Once again management are jumping to unilateral conclusions and decisions. Just because they say the all issues have been resolved does not make it so.

There is a process which they have to follow, but clearly have not.

The reference to being “unlawful” only relates to one issue under dispute. They have never received any official response to indicate that all others matters are now completely uncontested.

They must allow EIS HQ to fully assess their proposals and be given an opportunity to request further clarification where needed. Until EIS HQ advise the branch members and the management that ALL issues have now been satisfactorily clarified and addressed, they cannot unilaterally tell the branch they don't have a dispute anymore.

It is absurd to think that this could possibly be the case. They are clearly delusional.

I just want to add how heartening it was when the management tried to scare the staff in to coming back to work, that again we all stood together to protect this college and our students. Our hearts were kept warm even if every other parts of our body were freezing cold.

Yes I agree. I have worked at Telford for 20 years and it is wonderful to see colleagues supporting each other in this struggle for equality in the work place. We have our dignity back. Let us rid ourselves of these incompetent bully boys for good. We should all be proud of ourseleves.....well done

And I would just like to add my appreciation for a Branch Committee who are prepared to listen to us and let us take this action.
